臺灣及亞太地區的語言與文化有一脈相通之處。在歷史的進路中，透過貿易、宗教、移民和殖民歷史網絡，相互聯繫或競合。使得每種語言或文化都為其他語言和文化提供了特定的視角，反映在對文化和語言規範的同化、修改、衍生、當地化，或其他形式的使用與實踐。本中心將透過田野調查、訪問外國學者、記錄亞太地區的文化遺產等方式，中心以台灣為重點，建立與其他研究機構的交流串聯，以豐富對亞太地區文化及語言的理解。
國立高雄大學人文社會科學院亞太語言文化研究中心(Research Center for Asia Pacific Languages and Cultures (APLAC))(以下簡稱中心)為院級研究中心，依照「國立高雄大學研究中心設置辦法」設立，正式成立於108年8月1日。現任中心主任爲西洋語文學系奧利華副教授。
成立目的:
促進亞太地區之語言、文化、社會、歷史及生活環境之研究和記錄，並且與研究相關主題的國際研究單位進行交流。本中心擴增學術訪問機會，促進國際學者互訪及合作、田野研究、出版、提供文化及語言課程、營隊或各界委辦之相關項目，以達學術知識的提升、深化跨文化理解，並在亞太區域間實踐和諧的合作方向。
Accumulation of experiences, insights, records, data and knowledge is meaningless unless shared among people to be carried on and improved and re-shared. APLAC therefor organizes workshops, conferences, courses and winter schools. Researchers of APLAC join conferences or give talks on topics we can contribute to.
All collaboration requires to learn from each other. Yet sometimes we have to stand still and understand that much of what needs to be understood cannot be found in a books. Therefor we meet friends and people and listen.
